The treads of a staircase should not squeak. That’s why we go to great
extremes to ensure that Grahame-built stair treads don’t.

We router our skirt boards to accept the treads, guaranteeing a snug fit. We rabbet
the treads and risers so that when the wood ‘breathes’, they move together. We
then glue, shim and fasten our treads to the carriage to an extreme that many of
our peers have called “excessive!"

That’s okay with us!

Balusters in most homes tend to move or make noise, creating a musical
instrument that defies description.

Grahame Construction secures the wooden balusters to the handrail, as well
as the tread, in a manner that prevents movement. If you have
chosen an iron balustrade, we secure those in a similar manner, but we also
make sure that the rake and/or base collars along with the “knuckles”
(or adjustable collars) are secured as well. We make sure that the methods
we employ meld into their surroundings and are camouflaged.
