APRON

NEWEL -

the structural vertical post that supports the rail system. This can be comprised of wood or metal and is used at the beginning and end, as well as directional changes, of the handrail sections. Proper applications require the use of newels on balcony or any horizontal areas where there is a span greater than eight feet. While eight feet on center is the maximum spacing recommended (*) for balcony newels, closer spacing is often used to incorporate architectural design for balance and alignment of stair components.
