GLOSSARY~ Main Page
APRON BALUSTER - also known as “spindles”, these are the decorative vertical pieces connecting the handrail to the treads, creating a strong and safe balustrade. Minimum building codes mandate that there not be more than 4” between balusters preventing a child from getting his/her head stuck between the balusters. A 4” diameter ball or sphere is used by stair builders and code enforcement officers to verify this requirement. Please check with your local code enforcement officer for the specific building code requirements in your area.
